God used this book to challenge m y beliefs about worship, and how to worship. I knew about worship, in my mind I was already in agreement with Kauflin’s edifying words and challenges, but my heart was slow to catch up with my head.
I found myself often reading a challenging paragraph and knowing I needed to really put some faith behind these ideas.I want to highlight the two ideas I struggled with most in the book. The first comes from chapter 4, Worship and Community. As a worship leader in my church this chapter challenged me to think about what’s best for the congregation I’m leading. To me it seems obvious that eliminating distractions for the congregation to connect with God corporately is of paramount importance, but in application, it is easy to make decisions that are contrary to corporate worship.Secondly, I was challenged in chapter 8, Worship and the Presence of God.
As a musician I tend to associate music, and very emotionally driven music at that, with the presence of God. But, God’s presence is accessible at all times. During emotionally driven worship songs, corporate prayer times, sermons, fellowship meals, car rides, dish washing, and in every other situation of life. I know that is true, but I have trouble believing in the availability of God’s presence in every moment.Those two challenges are but a brief preview of the theological and practical challenges Kauflin offers to his readers. Every worship team should read this book, and others like it along their journey.
